Thanks to electronic communications such as email, a “new night shift” has emerged when after normal business hours, employees log back on to work -- or never log off -- in order to address incoming messages. How does this trend affect employee emotions and the experience of work-family conflict? Do the effects depend on characteristics of the sender (who it’s from, the nature of the email) and the receiver (employee preferences for balancing work and family)? Wendy Boswell, a professor of management at Texas A&M University Mays Business School, and her colleagues conducted a study surveying hundreds of employees from a variety of industries to discover the pros and cons of this “new night shift.” To book an interview with Prof. Boswell, contact Lesley Henton, Division of Marketing & Communications at Texas A&M University, at [email protected].
