Newswise — PARK RIDGE, ILLINOIS – Kathryn White, DNP, CRNA, APRN, a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA), from Shoreview, Minn., has been selected as a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing (AAN). White joins the ranks of an elite group of just over 2,000 nursing professionals, and only 30 CRNAs, who have been elected as AAN Fellows since the academy was established in 1973.

White is an associate clinical professor, program director, and coordinator of the nurse anesthesia program at the University of Minnesota, School of Nursing in Minneapolis, Minn.

White was involved in the first edition of the book, Doctor of Nursing Practice Essentials: A New Model for Advanced Practice Nursing . This book was the first of its kind to explore all of the Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP) Essentials. To date, the book has sold over 21,400 domestic and international copies, demonstrating an impact and influence on the development of DNP programs across the nation and the world.

“Selection as a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing is recognition of lifelong achievement in either advocacy for nursing or research in nursing. It is a mark of quality in the larger world of academia and it supports the notion that nursing and nurse anesthesia are areas of study independent from Medicine and not a subset of medical therapies,” said White. “Indeed nurse anesthesia is stronger and no longer known as “the best kept secret in healthcare. Many thanks to all of the CRNAs who led the way.”

The AAN is an organization of distinguished nursing leaders who are recognized for their outstanding contributions to the profession through publications, research, awards and honors, professional activities, and community service. The academy’s Fellows represent all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and 24 countries. The induction will take place during the academy’s 2016 Annual Policy Conference in Washington, D.C., Oct. 20-22.
