Newswise — (PHILADELPHIA) -- Today, EBONY Magazine announced that Edith Mitchell, M.D., Professor of Medical Oncology at Thomas Jefferson University and President of the National Medical Association, was named one of the individuals honored in the 2015 EBONY Power 100 List.

"I am elated to be chosen by EBONY Magazine and to celebrate the collective achievements of our community in this spectacular event," says Dr. Mitchell, who is also the Director of the Center to Eliminate Cancer Disparities and Associate Director for Diversity at the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center at Thomas Jefferson University.

The EBONY Power 100 list celebrates some of the most inspiring African Americans. It honors those who have made tremendous impacts on their communities and their industries. The gala, now in its fifth year, brings together every aspect of the African American community, including top names in entertainment, medicine, education, and government.

Dr. Mitchell is indeed an inspiring force in her community. She was the first female physician to attain the rank of Brigadier General in the US Air Force, and did so while balancing a busy career as an oncologist. As a Program Leader of Gastrointestinal Oncology at Jefferson, she sees each of her patients as individuals and treats each with a unique plan of action that takes into account the latest research and clinical studies. Her focus on improving her patients' outcomes flows directly into her research, which aims to refine and improve treatment for patients with many cancer types including breast, colorectal, pancreatic and other gastrointestinal malignancies. She has over 100 publications in journals, book chapters, and abstracts.

This summer, Dr. Mitchell was inducted as the President of the National Medical Association, the nation's oldest professional society for African American physicians. One of the NMA's main goals is to promote equality and eliminate health disparities as well as increase representation of African Americans in medicine. Dr. Mitchell has embodied those goals throughout her career through her community outreach, research, and mentorship.

On December 2nd, Dr. Mitchell will join other luminaries in the African American community for a gala in Los Angeles. For more information about the event, visit http://www.ebony.com/power100-2015/ .
