Newswise — Sunday marked the first night of Hanukkah.

The Chabad of Hackensack hosted the city’s Annual Menorah Lighting and Kick-Off Celebration of the eight-day holiday outside the Bergen County Courthouse.

Dozens of people came out for the event that included music, dancing and a fire show.

Hackensack Mayor, John P. Labrosse joined Rabbi Mendy Kaminker to introduce Micha Kaufman and Michael Goldsmith to light the first candle.

Two years ago, this week, Micha was walking back from synagogue when he was struck by a car and suffered a severe, traumatic brain injury. Micha’s prognosis was very bleak but with the care he received at Hackensack University Medical Center and the prayers and support he received from his family and community, Micha continues to improve. He was happy and grateful to not only attend Sunday’s celebration but to light the first candle with Micheal, who was one of the very first COVID-19 patients in New Jersey. Micheal spent 22 days in a coma at Hackensack University Medical Center and nearly lost his life to the virus. But again, thanks to the care and prayers he received, Micheal is grateful to be alive and thrilled to partake in last night’s festivities.

Rabbi Kaminker said who better to light Hackensack’s Menorah than Micha and Michael, two miracles who are proof in the power of prayer. Lighting the Menorah, he said, is a rededication of commitment to faith and family and with each succeeding night, magnifies the blessing of the holiday.
