Newswise — Fort Lauderdale-Davie, Fla. - Nova Southeastern University (NSU) President and CEO George L. Hanbury II, Ph.D., along with Kimberly Durham, Psy.D., chairperson, NSU’s Quality of Life Council (QOL), recently recognized Broward County Public Schools as recipient of the university’s “Outstanding Community Partner of the Year.”
During NSU’s annual Faculty Research and Development and Quality of Life Grant Awards Ceremony, the university acknowledges an organization for demonstrating true partnership in going above and beyond expectations in dedicating time and resources to sponsor NSU’s Quality of Life faculty community-based applied research in Broward County.
“In the QOL’s 11-year history, Broward County Public Schools have demonstrated a commitment to collaborative research with NSU to strengthen families, promote resilience, improve education, and develop programs to improve the quality of life for children and families in our community” said Hanbury.
A number of important projects have resulted from this partnership, including an evaluation of a supported employment program for adolescents with special needs; a project which addressed the needs of gifted and talented students who have Autism or a Specific Learning Disability, and a study of a school-based, family focused intervention developed for low-income ethnic minority and immigrant children living in South Florida. As a result of these collaborative efforts, external funding from organizations such as the Children’s Services Council of Broward County have been awarded to grow and sustain the benefits of this research by NSU faculty, students, and community partners, in Broward’s public schools and beyond.
On hand to accept the award on behalf of the Broward schools were School Board Chair Laurie Rich Levinson and Superintendent of Broward County Public Schools Robert W. Runcie.
