In Oct., researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham published what they believe is the first study to look at injuries to spectators at sporting events.

Amit Momaya, M.D., a sports medicine orthopedic surgeon at UAB, says a registry of injuries is needed to better understand how to make venues safer.

"Without data, there is no way to judge if spectator injuries are becoming more or less prevalent,” Momaya said. “There is no way to determine if more aggressive safety measures are warranted."

UAB has a broadcast quality studio.
