Newswise — As part of its ongoing focus to enhance diversity system wide, the University of California has asked that each of its ten campuses establish advisory councils on climate, culture and inclusion. The first meeting of the UC San Diego Council on Climate, Equity and Inclusion, chaired by Chancellor Marye Anne Fox, took place on campus Thursday, July 22. In keeping with the guidance provided by the University of California Office of the President, the Council will be advisory to the Chancellor and will comprise individuals with substantive expertise in diversity from represented constituencies including faculty, students, alumni, staff and administrators and community members. “It is essential that our UC San Diego community work cooperatively to remove barriers to academic success for underrepresented students and to ensure a positive and welcoming campus climate for all,” Chancellor Fox said. “We are committed to the action plan outlined in the Spring 2010 quarter and to the additional initiatives from units across the campus that will advance our ongoing diversity-related efforts.”
At the July 22 meeting, the UC San Diego Council discussed the primary responsibilities of its charge: to assess campus climate, apply research-based theoretical frameworks on climate, identify best practices and recommend improvements in policy and practices to ensure equity for all members of the campus community.
UC San Diego alumnus Anthony Jackson, M.D. is the Council’s co-chair and one of two alumni representatives. An involved parent of a UC San Diego student, he participated in the university’s early calling campaign this spring to personally notify students they had been admitted to UC San Diego.
“The recent increase of admitted underrepresented students who accepted their offer shows UC San Diego’s recruiting efforts have gained a lot of momentum,” Jackson said. “As an alum and parent of a current undergraduate, participating in the calling campaign gave me the great opportunity to communicate personally with prospective students on how educational opportunities and the supporting resources at UC San Diego are unmatched.”
