Who: Raul Coimbra, MD, PhD, executive vice-chairman for the department of surgery and division chief of trauma for the UC San Diego Health System, is broaching the subject once again during a statewide trauma and resuscitation conference being held in San Diego.

When:Thursday, Friday and Saturday, February 9 -11, 2012, 9:45 a.m. – 4 p.m. Where: Paradise Point Resort and Spa,1404 Vacation Road, San Diego, CA 92109

Interviews: Dr. Coimbra and other leaders in the field of trauma surgery will be in attendance to discuss the most cutting edge technology and the latest trends in trauma care, concepts that could be incorporated into a statewide system.

Why: While San Diegans live in a region that enjoys one of the best trauma systems in the world, California, as a whole, does not. The formation of a statewide trauma structure has been discussed for 20 years. Its development is once again generating interest thanks to the efforts of Dr. Coimbra and others. Statistics show that survival rates increase by at least 25% in areas covered by the trauma umbrella.

“You could drive for hours throughout California and find yourself in pockets where there are no trauma centers, a statewide system will insure that every inch of California is covered and people are directed immediately to the right facility and personnel in case of an emergency,” said Dr. Coimbra.
