Newswise — These days, mealtimes are often accompanied by cell phones. Family members gather around a table to eat with their heads bent and fingers texting furiously. Jessica Kendorski, PhD, a psychologist with Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, says that the holidays can be the perfect time to break that bad habit, and encourage more one-on-one interaction.

“Research has shown that the mere presence of a phone limits the chance for real connection and in-depth conversation, because the assumption is the phone could cause an interruption at any moment,” she says.

To that end, Kendorski suggests a “family digital detox” this holiday season, which includes:

• Putting the phone to bed, the same way you might put a child to bed; • Curbing the trend of walking and texting, notice your surroundings. • Prior to dinner, collecting all the mobile devices in a basket and taking it out of the room.• Wonder, think, and have a conversation; instead of immediately looking for the answer.
