Newswise — DALLAS – Jan. 18, 2012 – UT Southwestern Medical Center today announced that Dr. John Warner, who has been instrumental in the design and planning of the new University Hospital currently under construction, has been named chief executive officer for UT Southwestern Hospitals, effective Feb. 1.

“UT Southwestern is known for teamwork, whether in caring for patients or in groundbreaking research,” Dr. Warner said. “I believe my experience in a number of roles at UT Southwestern has given me a deep understanding of our missions, and I look forward to leading the hospital team.

“I’m really proud to be a part of what I know we’re going to accomplish in the years to come.”

As one of the leaders of the planning process for the new 460-bed state-of-the-art hospital scheduled to open in 2015, Dr. Warner understands UT Southwestern’s clinical programs and the systems needed to support them.

“I am confident that under Dr. Warner’s leadership, our University Hospitals will focus on achieving the highest standards of clinical excellence, quality outcomes, volume growth, and cost efficient operations that are essential for our future,” said Dr. Bruce Meyer, executive vice president of health system affairs. “Dr. Warner will work closely with medical center leadership, faculty, and the entire staff of our hospitals to achieve these goals.”

Formerly assistant vice president for hospital planning, Dr. Warner is an interventional cardiologist who serves as medical director of the Doris and Harry W. Bass Jr. Clinical Center for Heart, Lung, and Vascular Disease.

Dr. Warner received his medical degree from Vanderbilt University and earned an MBA from the Physician Executive Program at the University of Tennessee. He completed residency training in internal medicine at UT Southwestern, where he served as chief resident, and fellowship training in cardiovascular disease and interventional cardiology at Duke University Medical Center.

He joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2003 and is currently an associate professor. His research interests and publications have centered on acute coronary syndromes, adult congenital heart disease, and risk factors for coronary artery plaque rupture and progression of atherosclerosis.
