Newswise — Ambler, PA (June 6, 2011) – The 26th Annual Clinical Symposium on Advances in Skin & Wound Care: The Conference for Prevention and Healing will be held September 9-12, 2011, at the Gaylord National Hotel & Convention Center, National Harbor, MD. The symposium is sponsored by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins (LWW), part of Wolters Kluwer Health, a leading provider of information and business intelligence for students, professionals, and institutions in medicine, nursing, allied health, and pharmacy. LWW is the publisher of the journal Advances in Skin & Wound Care.
One of the highlights of the symposium will be a 9/11 Tribute featuring a flag ceremony and two honored speakers: Brigadier General Rhonda Cornum will present a general session on caring for wounded soldiers, and Richard Picciotto, FDNY battalion commander and American hero, will recount his harrowing experience as the Twin Towers fell.
As in previous years, the symposium will include education sessions tailored to each of the many disciplines that serve wound care patients. More than 1,000 nurses, physicians, podiatrists, physical therapists, and dietitians are expected to attend. The symposium will offer CNE contact hours for nurses, CME credit for physicians, CPME credit for podiatrists, CEUs for physical therapists and physical therapy assistants and CPEUs for registered dieticians and dietetic technicians.
New in 2011 is a partnership with the American College of Hyperbaric Medicine (ACHM), which will hold its Annual Meeting in conjunction with the symposium. A dedicated hyperbaric track has been included in the slate of courses, and ACHM will offer a Physician Certification Exam and a Certified Hyperbaric and Wound Specialist Exam at the conclusion of the conference on Monday,, September 12. Friday, September 9:• Seven preconference workshops will be offered. Topics include management of the diabetic foot; wound care essentials; a workshop for wound care representatives; implementing NPUAP/EPUAP guidelines; a wound care skills lab; how to use biophysical technologies, and a virtual debridement course.• Baranoski will host the symposium’s Welcome and Opening Ceremony. • The Keynote Address will feature Barbara Bates-Jensen, PhD, RN, CWOCN, assistant professor at UCLA School of Nursing & School of Medicine. Dr. Jensen will explore the topic of turning schedules for challenging patients in her session “Turn, Turn, Turn: The Reality of Positioning Patients of Any Size.”
Saturday, September 10:• Caroline Fife, MD, CWS, and Richard Salcido, MD, will deliver the opening general session on “A Year in the Life of a Wound Care Patient: Point Counterpoint.” Dr. Fife is Associate Professor, Division of Cardiology, University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston, TX; and Dr. Salcido is the symposium’s course director and Editor-in-Chief, Advances in Skin & Wound Care. They will lead an interactive session that examines the quandaries of contemporary wound care and the challenges of providing optimal care in a cost-constrained environment.

Sunday, September 11:• 9/11 Tribute with Flag Presentation, followed by a special general session by Brigadier General Rhonda Cornum, Director of Comprehensive Solder Fitness, U.S. Army. General Cornum will explain how the current “died of wounds” rate has dropped, calling for better wound care, during her session “Caring for Warriors and Their Wounds.”• Richard Picciotto, the highest ranking firefighter to survive 9/11, will present a special session at 5:15 pm. Picciotto, who was an FDNY battalion commander, will describe his experiences as he fought to save lives that tragic day during his session, “The Last Man Standing.”
Monday, September 12• Three general sessions will be offered.• Closing Keynote address by Dr. Fife and Kevin Yankowsky, JD, Partner, Fulbright & Jaworski LLP, Houston, TX.
