Newswise — BALTIMORE, MD — The Association of Academic Physiatrists (AAP) today announced its successful bid to bring the International Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (ISPRM) Congress to the Washington DC area in 2020. This prestigious congress and exhibition is set to take place in the summer of 2020 and is expected to attract thousands of leading physiatrists from across the globe.

For the past few months, the AAP board of trustees and staff have been working extremely hard to craft a bid to host the congress. Required elements of the bid included information about AAP, information about the host location Washington DC, letters of support from leading institutions across the country, and potential educational topics and networking venues. AAP President, Gerard Francisco, MD, presented AAP’s bid to the ISPRM assembly of delegates at the 2016 ISPRM Congress in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia where AAP also participated in the exhibition to spread awareness of academic physiatry and to recruit international members. The bid presentation was well received and demonstrated AAP’s capacity to host a successful ISPRM congress with clarity, passion, and excitement, leading to a favorable vote by the ISPRM assembly of delegates.

“It is an honor for us to host this congress to bring physiatrists together from across the globe to the continental United States for the first time,” said AAP President, Gerard Francisco, MD. “As the only academic society dedicated to physiatry in the world, AAP understands the importance of international collaboration and values the contributions of other nations to our specialty. It is important to learn from each other to build stronger physiatry training programs and improve physiatric research worldwide.”

The program for ISPRM 2020 will include keynotes from a range of international speakers, as well as workshop sessions, and poster sessions. The exhibition will provide a platform for companies and institutions to showcase their products and services to a global audience.

Information about ISPRM 2020 and opportunities to get involved will be made available through the AAP website in the future.
