CORNELL UNIVERSITY MEDIA RELATIONS OFFICEJanuary 21, 2016 Cornell biologist available for interviews about the Zika virus following outbreak in Latin America

Several Latin American countries have seen a surge in the number of Zika virus cases, with the largest known outbreak happening in Brazil. According to health officials, the virus has caused the death of several infants and almost 4,000 cases of microcephaly, a rare brain defect in babies.

Laura Harrington, chair of the Department of Entomology at Cornell University, is a vector biologist and expert on the biology of the main vector of Zika virus, Aedes aegypti.

She is available to comment on the epidemiology, transmission, symptoms and control of the vector – which is the only known form of prevention.
