Vacations, camps and outdoor jobs are all a part of summer for many youth. Unfortunately, so are sunburns. Sustaining just five or more sunburns in youth nearly doubles an individual’s lifetime melanoma risk. Research also indicates that few youth — approximately 10 percent — report routinely using sunscreen when outdoors during the summer months.

Dr. Christopher Huerter is a dermatologist and professor in Creighton University’s School of Medicine who can provide tips for avoiding unhealthy sun exposure this summer. Huerter can provide information about skin cancer risks as well as the dangers of tanning, whether indoors or outside.
