Newswise — Experts from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) are working closely with state mental health coordinators in the Gulf States to provide technical assistance as they assess the impact and address current mental health needs and plans for potential needs in the coming months and years following this disaster.

In support of state efforts, SAMHSA developed public education messages to raise awareness about how to recognize signs and symptoms of emotional health problems and where to go for help. Six “tip sheets” on topics such as grief, managing stress and help for response workers have been posted on the SAMHSA website and are being translated into several languages for residents and responders.

SAMHSA is prepared to work with States and communities as they provide programs, services, and consultation to mitigate the behavioral health impact and restore the Gulf Coast.
