Free Feb. 11 Educational Event Brings World-Renowned Oncologists to West Palm Beach
Newswise — HOUSTON ― Cancer experts from The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center return to West Palm Beach Feb. 11 for the institution’s annual Making Cancer History® seminar. The event, in the Cohen Pavilion of the Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts, 701 Okeechobee Blvd., begins at 8:30 a.m. with a breakfast buffet.
Presentations begin at 9 a.m., featuring:
• Ronald DePinho, M.D., president of MD Anderson; • Christopher Logothetis, M.D., chair of the Department of Genitourinary Medical Oncology; and • Laurence Cooper, M.D., Ph.D., chief of the Division of Pediatric Cell Therapy.
The two-hour program includes a question-and-answer session allowing audience members to ask DePinho, Logothetis and Cooper about cancer-related topics.
MD Anderson, which celebrated its 70th anniversary last year, is one of the world’s most-respected centers devoted exclusively to cancer patient care, research, education and prevention. With the largest cancer clinical trials program in the nation, the institution receives more peer-reviewed National Cancer Institute research grants than any other academic institution in the United States.
Since March 1944, nearly 900,000 people have registered as patients at the institution, including more than 22,500 people from Florida. More than 1,200 Floridians became new patients in FY2011.
Not only is MD Anderson the largest freestanding cancer center in the world, it also has developed a number of local, national and international affiliations. For example, MD Anderson Cancer Center Orlando was the institution’s first fully affiliated partner outside of Texas. Through this partnership, MD Anderson-Orlando physicians consult with MD Anderson physicians in Houston via televised sessions, enabling Florida patients to have more than one oncologist review their diagnoses and treatment plans.
MD Anderson is a founding member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, which includes the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute in Tampa and other leading cancer centers across the nation.
