Presidential Keynote – David Epstein Sunday, April 6, 10:40 a.m. - 11:10 a.m.
New York Times best-selling author of The Sports Gene. Epstein is an investigative reporter at the nonprofit newsroom, ProPublica. Previously, he was a senior writer at Sports Illustrated, where he focused on sports science and medicine. Epstein is perhaps best known for co-authoring the story that exposed the steroid use of Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez. Epstein will explain the connection between genetics and early, intensive training in one sport, and what roles they play in a young athlete’s athletic development. He will also examine how the 10,000-hour rule may not be the best method for achieving long-term success in sports, potentially jeopardizing the health of the athlete. Epstein will share how athletes’ body types have changed faster than the gene pool of humanity and how this information could assist athletes in choosing the right sport to achieve peak performance.
