Newswise — WASHINGTON, D.C. (June 12, 2012) – Featuring international and American thought leaders in sex differences research, the annual meeting of the Organization for the Study of Sex Differences (OSSD), a flagship program of the Society for Women’s Health Research (SWHR), took place June 7-9 in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, and was hosted jointly this year with the International Society for Gender Medicine (IGM) for the first time. Highlighting young investigators and renowned researchers from across the globe, the sixth annual meeting allowed for international collaboration and innovation in the field of sex differences.

The meeting featured presentations by IGM President Dr. Marek Glezerman, Dr. Marianne Legato, and Dr. Chris Gregg among many others, and a young investigators symposium including international and American post-doctoral students interested in sex differences research. Panels included active discussions on such topics as sex differences in osteoarthritis, severe coronary artery disease, and sex disparities in cancer.

OSSD, a program of the Society for Women's Health Research (SWHR), works to enhance the knowledge of sex/gender differences by facilitating interdisciplinary communication and collaboration among scientists and clinicians of diverse backgrounds. Partnering with IGM for the first time, the meeting featured over 200 attendees from 11 countries.

“Encouraging discussion and further research into sex differences are what these meetings are all about,” said Phyllis Greenberger, MSW, president and CEO of SWHR. “With international participants in attendance this year, we hope to share our message with a wider audience in an effort to encourage more young researchers to include sex as a variable across the globe.”
